I have tried many brands of cleanser both inexpensive and expensive. I have a mature, dry skin so I have never used soap and water on my face. The cleansers I usually go for are rich and creamy so that they leave my skin softened ready for me to apply my normal moisturizer.

However, I've been on an economy drive this past few months so when I ran out of my usual cleanser (which probably cost in the region of $25) I decided to start using clear baby oil. Using a flat, cotton-wool pad (not a cotton-wool ball) I tip about half a teaspoon of the oil onto the pad and gently remove all make-up, including eye-makeup. Then, using a clean, soft face cloth, I put the cloth into hot, clean water, ring out the cloth and then whilst it's still very warm, I just wipe the cloth over my skin and that takes off the residue of oil. I do my face and neck areas with this.

The result is a clean, softened skin which is suitably prepared ready for my usual moisturizer. By taking off the oil with the dampened face cloth you don't get an oily residue. But I do have a dry skin, so I'm not sure how this would work on an oily skin.

For those with an oily skin, maybe you could finish off with a toner to really remove all traces of the oil.
